Great American Book Sale Underway

Posted: Updated:
Books that cost as little as 50 cents: That's what you'll find at the 36th annual Great American Book Sale at Villa Maria Academy this week. The sale kicked off Sunday afternoon and acts as a fundraiser for Erie County Public Libraries. As event co-chair Bob Gallivan explains, the sale provides additional money for books and other activities.

"We like to think in terms of what we support are extras,” Gallivan said. “Enrichment things, programming, we do a lot of programming for adults, for kids."

The books were donated by both the general public and other libraries. For Amy Littlefield and her son, Dylan, the sale is an annual tradition and one that Dylan especially looks forward to.

"He lives for this book sale, he talks about it all year long,” she said. “He was kind of talking in his sleep this morning about big books, and little books, and so many books and you can get anything you want."

Katie Harakal agrees. The third grader at Our Lady's Christian School in Erie says reading truly is fundamental.

"You can read poems, you can read chapter books, you can read mysteries, you can read all sorts of things,” Harakal said. “There really is something for everybody out there."

Readers came in by the thousands all Sunday afternoon, and organizers tell us it's not uncommon for them to come back throughout the week.

"About four to six to eight thousand (people) today and maybe four or five (thousand) tomorrow,” Gallivan said. “Throughout the week, a couple of thousand each day. A lot of the people donate books to us and then they come back and buy some different ones later on."

The sale lasts all week, and will once again include the Dollar Bag Day on Friday.
