Angry Senior Citizens Speak Out in Millcreek

Posted: Updated:
Senior citizens in Millcreek got their opportunity to speak out today.  The seniors are upset because the township supervisors are ending a contract with the agency that operates the township's senior center.

Two of the three supervisors were at the meeting, and the seniors did not hold back their feelings on the issue. The seniors like their center and they like the agency that runs it. But, the supervisors are pulling the plug on the operation after it's been open for only a few months.

The Millcreek Senior Center is located on Legion Road.  It's called "The J.O.Y. Center," with J.O.Y. standing for "Just Older Youth." Supervisor John Groh stood before the seniors. He explained the reason why the contract will be ending with MECA, the agency that operates the center.  Groh says it comes down to simple math.  He explained that the 4-year lease agreement for the building, combined with the contract with MECA, would total $748,000.  He divided that number by the 218 Millcreek residents he says are members of the senior center.  That number comes to $858 per person, per year.  That, he said, is too expensive a cost for just a small number of people.

"I think it's shameful.   I think it's egregious, and I think that they have not given the seniors the opportunity to say what they may ort may not like," said Georgia Lutz, J.O.Y. Center member.

The senior center was a pet project of former supervisor Joe Kujawa, who lost his re-election bid last November.  Despite the seniors' objections today, it looks like MECA's contract will be shut down on August 27.  The supervisors will announce their new plan for a senior center in July.
