LOS ANGELES, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Positive Results Corporation (PRC) will offer Los Angeles-area teens more resources to help them build healthy relationships this summer. The PRC is using a grant from the Verizon Foundation to expand the reach of its Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness program.
The program focuses on all the elements needed to create healthy relationships. Youth participate in "Real Talk" workshops that include leadership skills, personal safety, violence prevention and building self-esteem. The program also trains peer advocates to spread the culture of non-violence in the community.
Kandee Lewis, executive director for the PRC said, "Verizon sponsored our teen summit, Stop The Pain, last year, and this was a natural progression in our relationship. They saw what we were doing in the community and wanted to continue to support our relationship/domestic violence awareness and prevention campaign."
Julia Cooksey, director of government and external affairs for Verizon, said, "Verizon supports the work of nonprofits like the Positive Results Corporation, as they strive to improve the communities where our employees work and live. Together, we can help our youth learn about healthy relationships and how to prevent violence."
For more than a decade, Verizon, through its various business units and its philanthropic foundation, has been a champion of ending domestic violence. Verizon supports a broad range of programs that include: training health care practitioners and first responders about screening for signs of abuse; engaging men as role models and advocates for prevention; educating teens about preventing dating violence; and providing resources for domestic prevention organizations and survivors.
The PRC's program not only targets youths, it also provides classes for Los Angeles County families, including foster care and homeless families.
Kandee said, "Support from Verizon will allow us to use a broad approach to reach our audience, service youth, collaborate with youth-serving organizations, churches, group homes and community-based organizations to reach as many young men and women as possible."
The PRC also conducts outreach via email, social media, Internet radio and in-person.
