Unusual Month for Gasoline Prices in Erie

Posted: Updated:
It's been an interesting month of June for gasoline prices in the Erie area.

For the past three years, the price of a gallon of gas dropped by 20 cents during the month of June. This year, that drop never happened. Last year at this time, the average price of gas was $3.44 a gallon. Now, the average price is $3.68.  That's also the nationwide average and the statewide average.  Crude prices have gone up $6 a barrel over the past two weeks.  That coincides with an escalation of violence in Iraq.

David Poor, Regional President of AAA in Erie, says gas prices will increase with demand over the 4th of July.  He says the highest price ever in Erie was $4.06 a gallon six years ago.

"Interestingly, that was on July 1, 2008. So, we're not that far removed from our all-time high.  And, it was at this time of year that it occurred," he said.

Poor believes the price of gas will not rise above $4 a gallon this year.  He believes people would change their driving habits if it does, and retailers would not want to see a drop in demand.

There are currently bargains to be found in Erie.  At Route 97 and I-90, the price of gas is 13 cents cheaper than the area average .
