Bizzarro's Legislation on Way to Becoming Law

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, June 24 – Legislation co-sponsored by state Rep. Ryan A. Bizzarro, D-Erie, that would grant the Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society ownership of several historic sites in Erie County is headed to the governor’s desk.

House Bill 1945 would authorize the state Department of General Services to grant and convey Fort LeBoeuf Museum, Judson House and Washington Monument Park in Waterford to the Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society. The properties would be sold to the Historical Society for $1 each.

"I have been fighting for the Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society to gain rightful ownership of these treasured sites since taking office," Bizzarro said. "Not only will this legislation allow the organization to continue its important preservation work, but it would also provide future generations the opportunity to learn about Erie County’s rich and historic heritage."

Bizzarro said the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg would also return several historical artifacts back to Waterford, where they were found, as part of the legislation.

The Fort LeBoeuf Museum is located at the site of the original French fort constructed in the 18th century. It houses various exhibits on the Native Americans who inhabited the area, in addition to the British and French fur trade. Judson House, named after Waterford resident Amos Judson, was built in the early 19th century and features historical items in addition to the Historical Society’s genealogical research library. Washington Monument Park houses what is rumored to be the only statue of the first president wearing a British uniform in the state.

Introduced as House Bills 1367, 1368 and 1369, the efforts were amended into House Bill 1945, which was approved on concurrence in the state House on Tuesday. Once signed by the governor, the portion of the law regarding the Waterford properties would become effective in 60 days.
