"Super Kids" Race in Sharpsville Soapbox Derby

Posted: Updated:
The track is only two blocks in length. Some of the cars are built by high school students. But nothing was going to stop these drivers from feeling like they had just raced in the Daytona 500. More than 30 handicapped children raced in the 7th annual Super Kids Soapbox Derby Saturday morning in Sharpsville, a race like no other.

"This is the largest individual Super Kids race in the nation,” said Pam Dorfi, event organizer. “We have 35 kids this year, the Akron local Super Kids only had 28."

The race gives children with disabilities the chance to participate in something without their parents by their side. In the Dorfi’s eyes, that brings these kids a sense of independence.

"This is a sport where the kids' mom and dad don't kick a ball, don't bat a ball, they get in that car,” she said. “They get in with an experienced driver and they get to do something their mom and dad can't do for them."

When it comes to an event like this, organizers emphasize the motto of it’s not about winning or losing at the end of the day. It's all about getting in the car and having fun.

"Megan loves going down the hill, she likes the thrill of it,” said Linda Freeze, the mother of racer Megan Freeze. “It is great that the Greater Pennsylvania soap box derby provides this opportunity to her."

"It's real important for these kids,” said Christine Hamilton, the mother of Dillon and Austin Hamilton. “They get to feel the excitement of going down the hill like a typical racer. It's cool that they have that event every year for these kids."

As the race continues to grow, Dorfi hopes to put 50 children in the cars before she steps down as race director in three years.
