Erie Man Sentenced for Brutal Attack and Home Invasion

The Erie man who barged into an elderly couple's home, slashed their throats, and robbed them, will spend some serious time behind bars.

On Tuesday morning, a judge sentenced 23-year-old Adam Brown to 60 to 120 years in prison, for the brutal attack on Frank and Elfreda, or "Pat", Karmazin, last July.

Brown slit the couples throats, then locked them in a bedroom and drove off in their car.

In court Tuesday morning, Brown said, "I understand the severity of the crime and that I'm going to be locked up for a while; but maybe this time, you can give me some (medication) that can help me."

Brown said he's been taking his medications and behaving, while in prison.  Judge Connelly disagreed with that statement, stating Brown has had 25 major misdemeanors since he was incarcerated, last July.

While serving the lengthy sentence, Brown will undergo a mental health evaluation.  He has a long history of violence, starting with a burglary when he was just 11-years-old.

Judge Connelly handed down a sentence of 2 counts of attempted murder, 2 counts of robbery and 1 count of burglary.

He said Brown is still a clear and present danger to society.

"The victim survived by the grace of God.  You even tried to tie the door shut, so she would bleed to death," said Judge Connelly.

Pat, 82, was accompanied by friends and neighbors, in the court room, for Tuesday's sentencing.

She did not want to comment, but her lawyer, Chief Deputy District Attorney, Brian Krowicki, described her as 'tough as nails' and told us she is very pleased with the sentence.

"She was very relieved to see the case come to a closure and end with sentencing.  She is a particularly tough woman and she is very satisfied with the sentence," said Krowicki.

    An East Springfield man is in custody tonight, and is expected to be charged with robbing an Erie bank this afternoon. Police say 27-year-old Brad Croasmun robbed the bank for drug money.
