Two Pa. State Troopers Involved in Fatal Accident

Posted: Updated:
One person is dead after an accident involving a Pennsylvania State Police patrol unit.

Donna Platz, 57, of Edinboro, Pa., was killed after a vehicle driven by Trooper Frederick Schimp, 48, reportedly failed to stop at the intersection of Sterrettania Road and State Route 98 in Fairview Twp.  The accident occurred around 3:30a.m. Saturday morning. According to a report from Pennsylvania State Police, Schimp was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer Police utility vehicle with passenger Trooper Garrett Padasak, 26, westbound on Sterrettania Rd. when the patrol unit failed to negotiate a stop. The unit proceeded directly into the intersection where it struck Platz’s 2012 Suzuki Kizashi. The patrol unit was not responding to a call, according to the report.

Platz was pronounced dead on the scene by Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook at 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning. Schimp and Padasak were cut from their vehicle by Fairview Fire Department and taken to UPMC Hamot Trauma Unit with what are being called moderate injuries.

A Pennsylvania State Police Collision and Accident Reconstruction Specialist from Troop E, located in Erie, have been assigned to the ongoing investigation. The vehicles were removed from the scene and taken to Pennsylvania State Police Erie headquarters for further processing.
