EF-1 Tornado Touches Down In Mercer County

Posted: Updated:
MERCER COUNTY- Trees toppled and downed power lines would follow. This, all happening in seconds as the National Weather Service says an EF-1 tornado with 90 miles per hour winds would rip through the small town of Hoagland, PA. It would also send downburst winds more than 80 miles per hour through the small town of Jackson Center, Mercer County.

"It had to be one heck of a storm," survivor Rick Kearns says.

It would happen around 3:00p.m. Tuesday night. The skies turned gray, the winds began picking up and the hail would break loose.

Paul Lough’s Walnut Street home took a huge hit as part of it came down on top of his neighbor’s house.

"My whole roof is just 2-3 houses down so I was pretty shocked to see that,” Lough says. “The first thing that went through my mind was its all open and is my dog okay?"

In Kearns’ backyard was a giant tree uprooted within a matter of seconds as his family sought shelter inside their home.

"I went into the bedroom and I told them to get under the mattress and within a couple minutes it was gone," Kearns says.

Soon after, the sun came back out, bringing light to the storm that may've damaged some of their homes and belongings but residents say it’s not about how you fall but it’s about how you get up.
