Erie Port: 2014 Could be Busiest Year Ever

Posted: Updated:

Managers say this is shaping up to possibly be the busiest year ever for the Port of Erie.

Another load of 10 GE locomotives bound for Africa will be loaded onto a ship this weekend. It will be the second in a series of GE shipments through the port this year.

Also, large transformers are now at the port, waiting to be shipped to upstate New York.

And the port has been moving a lot more stone, sand and other bulk materials.

The increased business is welcome news for port operator, Erie Sand and Gravel.

Tod Eagleton of Erie Sand & Gravel said, "Erie Sand has operated the port for the past 20 years. It is by far the busiest we've been. It has kept our employment very stable. We've actually hired a few extra people to help out. guys are working a lot of extra hours. The overtime pay doesn't hurt."

The port also got a boost earlier this year, when large freighters, damaged by Great Lakes ice came into Erie for repairs.
