Union City Festival Honors Area's Heritage

Posted: Updated:
From the food to the fun, the 9th annual Gathering at French Creek is a festival that brings the community of Union City together.

"It's mainly a community event that everyone really enjoys,” said Tara Lineman, festival chairperson. “The non-profits have their booths here and they sell items so it supports the local community."

From the dunking booths to the bounce houses and yes, even the sand box, festival goers found their way to the grounds of Union City High School Saturday for the combination of both family fun and history.

"The girls love coming, they get to do lots of crafts,” said Amber Barnett, who brought her two daughters to the festival. “They get lots of free stuff. It's a good time to get out of the house and have fun.”

While people were having fun shopping and checking out the classic car show, there were just as many people taking in the Civil War reenactments, learning about the roles Native Americans and early settlers played in the battles.

"Native Americans played various roles in the Civil War as did most soldiers, they fought on both sides, the Confederate and the Union,” said Doug Taylor, a member of Cushings-Taylor Battery.

The history in Union City is quite extensive, dating back to the early days of America. Its former townspeople also played a big role firing weapons like these in the Civil War.

"Union City, there were a lot of troops, a lot of guys who were recruited here in Union City and went and fought for the Union Army,” Taylor said. “There were troops in the 83rd Pennsylvania that were recruited out of Union City and the 111th."

The festival concludes Saturday night with a Civil War style artillery fire and a screening of the movie “Saving Mr. Banks.”
