The Department of Drama announces recent name change.

Fayetteville, AR (PRWEB) July 14, 2014

The University of Arkansas Department of Drama is getting a makeover! The official name of the department is now the Department of Theatre. The name change was official as of July, and is reflected in catalogues and enrollment information beginning with the upcoming Fall semester.

The change more closely reflects and articulates the work we do as an academic unit and production-centered program, said Michael Riha, chair of the department.

The drama program at The University of Arkansas began as a part of the Department of Speech and Dramatic Art. It wasnt until 1980 that the program broke out on its own and become the Department of Drama.

Since the 1930s, M.A. degrees in drama have been granted to students. In 1996, however, the M.A. was phased out as the M.F.A. program was introduced. With its first graduates in 1999, the department has now conferred M.F.A. degrees on more than 100 students, in acting, directing, playwriting and all major areas of theatrical design.

The University of Arkansas Department of Theatre is excited for this new change and believes that it will be a positive improvement for the department, the university and its students.
