Sorek Shooting Death Case Sent to Trial

Posted: Updated:
Twenty-three year old Aladin Jojic of Erie will face trial on charges he shot and killed his friend Abram Sorek at a home on Kahkwa Boulevard last April.
District Magistrate Tom Robie made the ruling after Jojic appeared for a preliminary hearing in central court.
Prosecutor Matt Cullen first called Mike Wilcko to the stand.  Wilcko, who hosted a gathering the night of the deadly shooting offered most of the testimony during the two hour preliminary hearing.

Wilcko said he drank beers and fireball whiskey shots with Jojic and Sorek at two downtown erie bars before they headed to his hot tub at 609 Kahkwa Boulevard with two other friends. He said he brought two weapons out to show the group, his father's .40 caliber Glock pistol, which he unloaded and his AR-15 assault style rifle.
Wilcko said it was after he reloaded the gun and asked Jojic to carry it back in the house, that the tragedy happened. Wilcko says he told jojic the gun was now loaded. He said the two women present, Caitlin Dennis and Mary Frey were in the bathroom getting dressed and did not witness the shooting.  Wilcko said he heard the shot and saw Sorek fall in his dining room.

Prosecutors also played a video statement Jojic gave to police the night he was arrested. In it he said, "I was just playing around with it (the gun) messing around with it, cocked it back...I didn't think I was aiming at him (Sorek), I had my legs apart, I slipped, I pulled the trigger and it just blew my mind away." Jojic also said, "It was so surreal, like I couldn't believe it happened." Jojic also told detectives he thought the gun was still unloaded.  "Yes, sir," he said, "100% unloaded...if I knew the gun was loaded we would not be in this room."

After the hearing, defense Attorney Leonard Ambrose said he believes Jojic thought the gun was still not loaded, and that he's devastated by the death of his friend.  "I absolutely believe that is correct," said Ambrose, "If he would have had an inkling that the gun was loaded he would not have handled the gun...the gun was given back to him after it was reloaded and he didn't know it was loaded."

The charges sent to trial are involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. Prosecutor Matt Cullen declined to comment.
