Erie Forge & Steel Continues Demolition

Posted: Updated:
Work continues nearly one month into the demolition of Erie Forge & Steel's former melt shop. Crews began tearing down the building June 24 after obtaining a permit from the city of Erie. The 41.7 acre site located at W. 16th St. has been the forge's home since 1918, but now the plant is making changes. Erie Forge & Steel employees are demolishing the plant, not an outside contractor, something that surprised Erie Code Enforcement Manager Andy Zimmerman.

"For that size of a building and their own employees, they've done a pretty good job of demolishing the building,” Zimmerman said. “They started the end of June and now we're in the middle of July, a month, and they've done pretty well.”

In the permit, the forge is only allowed to demolish the melt shop. Zimmerman tells us the company has not requested to remove any other buildings on the site.

As crews continue to demolish part of the Erie Forge & Steel plant, they are leaving the concrete slab as the base of the building. And Zimmerman says that could indicate future construction.

"Normally, they'll do that. It cuts down on their mowing,” he said. “And in case they do ever want to build there, they have slab and foundation there that they can build off of."

EVEN THOUGH ONE BUILDING ON THE SITE IS COMING DOWN, DON'T EXPECT ANOTHER ONE TO GO UP IN ITS PLACE ANY TIME SOON.

"We have not received any other information that they're looking ot expand or soforth. But by leaving the slab and foundation, let's hope someday they do."

Calls to the forge’s Pittsburgh-based parent company, Whemco, were not returned Monday.
