Police Conduct Drug Sweep to Combat Heroin Problem in Jamestown

Posted: Updated:
Over 40 people are in jail after a major drug sweep in Jamestown, New York this morning.  The effort is the result of a year-long investigation to combat a big heroin problem  in that city.

The investigation was called "Operation Horseback."  It involved Jamestown Police, New York State Police, The Department of Homeland Security, and the New York State Attorney General's Office.  Today, police officers described  Jamestown as a city with a heroin problem so bad, that the drug suppliers cold not keep up with the demand.

At a news conference this afternoon, police posted pictures of at the 41 people taken off the streets today as a result of the investigation. Six others are still at large.  Arrests were also made in Binghamton, New York, New York City, and Puerto Rico.  Also on display were some of the heroin and guns confiscated during the sweep.

Deputy New York State Attorney General Peri Kadanoff said heroin was brought into Jamestown from three locations, New York City, Buffalo, and Philadelphia.

There was three separate heroin operations running in Jamestown, but the demand was so huge, that the three groups worked together to get heroin out into the streets. The joint investigation was launched after Jamestown Police saw a large increase in drug-related crimes such as burglary and larceny.
New York State Police Colonel Patricia Groeber said the arrests made today should take a bite out of the heroin problem, for now.

"The arrests of these individuals today will certainly stifle the flow of heroin and other drugs coming into this city.   But we should all be reminded, we cannot simply arrest our way out of this type of problem," she said.  "It's going to take all of us.    It's going to take law enforcement.   It's going to take parents.   Its going to take educators.   It's going to take health care providers and it's going to take the citizens here and around the state to put and end to this deadly trend."

Jamestown Police Chief Harry Snellings gave a startling example about Jamestown's heroin problem.  He said that in 2012, only 119 bags of heroin were seized by his department.  In 2013, that number grew to 326 bags.  In 2014, already, 3,767 bags of heroin have been confiscated.
