Actor Chris O'Donnell and Local Technology Leaders Gather to Support People Who Face Barriers to Employment

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today REDF announced that dynamic R&B singer Janelle Monae will perform an exclusive show at the sixth annual REDF Benefit on September 18th at the legendary Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. In an effort to raise funds and awareness to help transform lives and communities by creating jobs for people facing the greatest barriers to work, the annual event unites supporters and key stakeholders with members of the REDF Board of Directors such as actor Chris O'Donnell, Facebook's Dan Rose and Google's Adam Smith. To ensure an inspiring evening for all, the benefit host committee, including actor and recording artist LL Cool J and former 49er Ronnie Lott, invite guests to a private performance from Ms. Monae, a cocktail reception and seated dinner. Visit http://www.redf.org/benefit for more information about the event.

"Celebrating people like my parents and the working-class while helping to raise funds for an organization like REDF is an honor that's truly in line with my values," said singer Janelle Monae.

Since its founding in San Francisco in 1997, REDF has directly supported more than 50 social enterprises in California that have employed thousands of individuals who faced significant barriers to work, and earned more than $140 million in revenue.  To showcase the power of social enterprises, REDF will honor this year's Moldaw award winner, Juan Tello.  After serving a seven year prison term for crimes related to gang involvement, Mr. Tello found a second chance through Taller San Jose, a REDF-backed organization.  Juan is a full-time employee of Taller's social enterprise, Hope Builders, and a leading example to other individuals as they aim to turn their lives around through workforce training and employment.

"Stories like Mr. Tello's bring alive the result of our work -- funding job creation and employment opportunities for individuals who are too often shut out of the workforce," said Carla Javits, REDF President and CEO. "In addition to the transformational personal impact of getting and keeping a job, the benefits extend to families and communities, and even more broadly to the health of our society and to our country's economic stability. In short, together we're working for a brighter future, today."
