Erie police have made an arrest in a week old murder case that happened on the city's east side. At about 11:15 PM Friday, detectives arrested 24-year-old Dominic Diaz of 642 West 18th Street. Police say he was picked up in a West 21st Street tavern. Authorities say Diaz has a long criminal history. He is now facing charges of criminal homicide, murder aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing an instrument of crime.
The charges stem from the shooting death of 39-year-old Hercules Rieger. He was shot in the chest at the intersection of East 11th and Wayne Streets at about 2:45 AM on Saturday August 23. The murder happened outside of the Bearded Lady, a rental hall where a private party was underway.
Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers credited tips from the public and good work from the patrol division and detectives for leading to the arrest. Diaz was arraigned Saturday morning and placed in the county jail without bond.
Reiger's death is the 8th homicide in the city this year.
