Heavy Rains Cause Flooding Concerns For Erie Residents

Posted: Updated:
Erie-- In the midst of Sunday's heavy downpours, neighbors describe it looks like during a storm on the corner of Stafford and Walnut Street on Erie's west side.

“We call this Lake Stafford and there were times it was up to the kids' knees," resident Dave Quinlin says.

Inches of water build up around the storm drain and form a gully in the uneven pavement on the corner.

When it rains hard, the storm drain just can't handle it. Neighbors who've lived on the block for decades say standing water is common after a storm and it's just not safe.

"In the winter time, it freezes. It just lays there like it is now,” Quinlin adds. “They fly through this stop sign. There are kids on this block."

Tom Mayo has been living on Stafford Avenue for more than a decade. After years of complaining to the city, he says a streets department worker took notice and got the ball rolling.

"We just want this fixed,” Mayo says. “We're not asking for miracles. Just fix it."

State Representative Pat Harkins is listening. He tells reporter Justin Carter that he is working with city leaders to fix the problem before it gets any worse.

"It's ridiculous you got to get that far to get something this simple,” Mayo says. “There are streets that are not even this worse that get paved. Do the job right the first time and we won't have this problem. Do it right."
