Erieites Remember Joan Rivers' Legacy

Posted: Updated:
Fans around the world - and in Erie - are mourning the loss of entertainer Joan Rivers. She passed away on Thursday afternoon, after complications during throat surgery.

"She really made a lot of people laugh. She was a good woman, and I"m going to miss her greatly," said Skylar Kaylor, an Erie resident.

"I'll miss Joan," said Matt Jones, a big Joan fan from Erie.

Joan Rivers' comedy style was often describe as "loudmouth," "sassy," and "pushing boundaries."

"I would say that Joan Rivers was the very first queen of mean, but she presented it in her own persona, in her own way, and she nailed it," said Dave Litz Jr, co-owner of Junior's Last Laugh in Erie.

"Oh she was great, she had a very sarcastic sense of humor," said Noelle Kneidinger, a Gannon University freshman from Erie.

"She was super sassy and super funny, and everyone always laughed, even if she made fun of them," said Erica Kacprowicz, a Gannon student from Buffalo. "She literally had no filter," Kacprowicz said.

Rivers ' most recent claim to fame was as host of E! Entertainment's "Fashion Police," though she never stopped doing standup.

Fans of the show say she's irreplaceable.

"Fashion police is never going to be the same without her. I think they'd be crazy to continue that show without her," Jones said.

Rivers launched her career in the 1950's with standup comedy, broaching a field that's to this day, dominated by men.

Ellen Degeneres tweeted, "Joan Rivers will always be a pioneer. She paved the way for a lot of comedians. I'm very sad she's gone."

Fans say Rivers' style of funny is one of a kind.

"She got away with a lot of stuff and made a lot of people laugh. She could sell out a Vegas show anytime she wanted to. Her persona cannot be copied," Litz said.

"She was very snarky, I liked it though. It was good snarky," said Jessica Waskaski, a Pittsburgh native in Erie.

"She was a sassy old woman, I loved it," said Angela Coustillac, from Cleveland.

"I think sometimes she was a little crude, but I mean that was her sense of humor, she made fun of herself a lot - her crazy plastic surgery. But she was still beautiful," Jones said.

In a statement, daughter Melissa Rivers said, "My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

Joan Rivers was 81 years old.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Rivers, and 13-year-old grandson, Cooper.  Her funeral is scheduled for Sunday in New York City.
