Dog Fights to Recover in Disturbing Case of Animal Cruelty

Posted: Updated:
An animal was taken from an Erie home, after he was neglected and nearly starved to death.

Photos of the local dog went viral on social media, and now, he is fighting to recover in foster care.

The 10-month-old pit bull mix was confiscated from the home, last Wednesday.

Animal cruelty officers said they arrived to find the dog unresponsive.

Officials said the dog was kept in a cage in a dark basement, with minimal food and water, and was about 15 pounds underweight.

Officers discovered the dog, who does not yet have a name, when they received an anonymous complaint of animal cruelty.

The dog was taken to the A.N.N.A Shelter for treatment.

Officials at the A.N.N.A Shelter say the dog is doing much better; he is now able to eat, stand, and even walk.

They also say he wasn't the only dog living in the home.

"They ended up surrendering two dogs over to us.  The female dog is in pretty good shape for her age," said Kelly Haynes.  "That just makes us wonder, how can you neglect one dog and have another dog in the house who is completely fine."

A.N.N.A. Shelter employees said the dog will likely recover, but he needs extensive medical care.

Donations can be sent to the A.N.N.A Shelter, at 1555 East 10th Street, Erie, PA, 16511.

No word yet on what charges the former owners may face.
