Pennsylvania lawmakers address future of tax reform

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The House moving one step closer to the finish line.

“On this vote the ayes are 24 the nos are 16 the motion is agreed to," Rep. Kevin Brady, (R-TX-8) said. He is Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee.

The committee voted to advance their tax plan Thursday after four days of deliberation.

“This is one of the biggest things since I’ve been in Washington," Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA-3) said.

Kelly was in the center of it all. He believes his vote means more money in his constituent’s pockets.

“The people that I represent in Pennsylvania are going to have about 2700 dollars more in the take home pay and they’re going to pay about 2,000 dollars less taxes. That’s an incredible lift to hardworking American taxpayers," Kelly said.

Over in the senate, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey has a different take on how the House GOP plan will impact families in his state. He said the proposal will hurt middle class families the most.

“You’re doing two things, you’re not giving much of a middle class tax cut and two you’re doing nothing to increase wages and grow the economy," Kelly added.

Senate Republicans released their own plan Thursday. Members of the senate finance committee are pushing to get this done by the New Year. Casey said the whole process is too rushed.

“The idea that you can do tax reform that will affect people’s lives for the next 50 years and do that in a couple of days instead of over many months, which is the way the did in the mid 80s. That just doesn’t make any sense at all," Casey said.

The senate begins debate on their proposal next week and the House plan could vote as soon as next Wednesday. Republicans hope to fulfill President Trumps wish of getting this done by Christmas.
