Meadville's Dixon honored with Shafer Award
SAEGERTOWN, Pa. - One of Meadville's most well-known women was honored Wednesday evening.
Armendia Dixon received the Raymond P. Shafer Award for Distinguished Community Service during a ceremony in Saegertown. The Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce gives the award to the person who has made the biggest contribution to the quality of life in Crawford County.
Dixon has spearheaded a number of projects in the last year -- most notably, as president of Meadville's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund. Created in 1968, the fund has donated more than $200,000 to more than 125 students in the Crawford Central School District. She also spent decades teaching in Erie, Meadville and at Edinboro University.
At age 80, she is still going strong.
"We work together in Meadville, and we've worked together for a number of years to make this great city greater," Dixon said. "To me, that's what this celebration is all about."
Dixon stressed that none of this would be possible without the support of her family and friends.
