Race for Governor

Scott Wagner, the Pennsylvania state senator running as an outside conservative reformer, has clinched the Republican nomination for governor in November. He will face incumbent Democrat Tom Wolf in the general election.

Wagner defeated health care executive Paul Mango and attorney Laura Ellsworth to win the nomination with more than 45 percent of the vote with approximately 95 percent of the precincts reporting.

Wagner had the backing of the Pa. Republican Party and was the predicted favorite after launching his campaign in Jan. 2017. In an unorthodox move, he also picked his own running, Montgomery Co. real estate executive Jeff Bartos, who won the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor Tuesday.

Fetterman makes history with Lt. Governor victory

Braddock, Pa. Mayor John Fetterman defeated incumbent Democratic Lt. Gov. Mike Stack, the first time in modern history a sitting lieutenant governor has been defeated in a primary election.

Fetterman defeated Stack and three other candidates with more than 38 percent of the vote in what has been an uncharacteristically active race this spring.

Fetterman, the 6-foot-8, no non-sense, blue collar mayor who is known for traditionally ditching the suit-and-tie, will now run with Gov. Wolf in November. A Harvard grad, Fetterman leans far left and provides a fresh face and voice to the Democratic ticket.

The win, while an upset, isn't a total surprise. Stack faced an uphill battle for re-election following a scandal-plagued first term and occasionally butted heads with Wolf. Stack remains in fourth place with about 16 percent of the vote with approximately 95 percent of the precincts reporting.
