Children's Grief Awareness Day at Blessed Sacrament

Posted: Updated:

Four hundred Blessed Sacrament students showed their support for Children's Grief Awareness Day by dressing in the color blue all for those who have lost a loved one.

Girl Scout troops at the school organized a week-long project with the help of Highmark's Caring place.

Statistics show that before the end high school, one in 20 children will have a parent die. One in seven lose a sibling, grandparent, or parent in that time, and many children have trouble coping.

So each student at  blessed sacrament school has made a blue butterfly to represent to hang up during a school-wide assembly to express grief or show support for those grieving.

"In order to get their 'Hope' badge, they [the Girl Scouts] had to give back to the community and get the community aware of the grieving children," said Melissa Kerner, a Caring Place employee.

"Kids out there just want to let their feelings out if they lost a loved one," said Anabelle Kerner, a Girl Scout and 5th grade student.

Children's Grief Awareness Day started in Erie just five years ago, but has become a national event with thousands of participating schools. The day is on the Thursday before Thanksgiving because the holidays can be a particularly challenging time for children who have lost friends or family.
