State Grant Would Fund Little Italy Improvements

Posted: Updated:

Erie is now in line to get a state grant of more than $400,000 for improvements in the Little Italy neighborhood on the west side. Erie City Council tonight is expected to sign off on the agreement, a key step to finalizing the deal.

The money would be the latest step to enhance the neighborhood. There have been housing and business facade improvements in recent years. This grant would pay for new sidewalks, lighting and green space.

Rose Graham, Executive Director of the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network said, "It is really going to change the appearance of Little Italy. You change the sidewalks and the streets and you add flowers, it does an amazing thing to a neighborhood."

Neighbors tell us problems clearly remain but they are hopeful this grant will be another step toward improving the neighborhood.

Barbershop owner Cesar Ruiz said, "Slowly but surely  everything is looking better."

Six months later, Black’s neighbor Bobby Fletcher is still trying to make sense of his death. "I miss the guy,” said Fletcher. “This apartment building, it's a big complex. He cut the grass, when the snow came, he helped shovel. You don't find people like him." Police have released surveillance video of...More >>
