Fast Moving Fire Destroys Waterford Home

Posted: Updated:

A wood burning stove could be to blame for starting a fire that destroyed a home in Waterford, Thursday afternoon.

It took firefighters from 7 different departments 3 hours to control the blaze.

The fire began in the basement of the home, at 201 East St., and quickly spread all the way to the attic.

Neighbors reported seeing massive amounts of smoke billowing from the roof, around 3:30.

"We heard the sirens going off but we actually saw the smoke way before we heard the sirens," said neighbor, Bethany Whitling.

A man and a woman lived in the house but luckily,  no one was home at the time the fire broke out.

"I've known the guy for half my life and just knowing he was only a couple houses down at a friends house when it happened, is just sad," said the homeowner's former neighbor, James Orr.

Fire investigators said the house was old and the flames crept into the walls; making it an extremely tough fire to isolate.

Neighbors can't believe this happened so close to Easter.

"A fire at anytime is horrible but being this close to a holiday is even worse," said neighbor, Tatiana Whitling.

Fire crews from Union City, Mill Village, Edinboro, Kuhl Hose and Mckean were all called out to assist.
