Posted: Updated:
Erie police are investigating a deadly car pedestrian accident. It happened just after 9:00 PM Sunday in front of the Knights of Saint John Club on West 26th Street near Poplar Street.

Witnesses say a dark colored buick sedan was headed west on 26th Street when it hit a couple crossing the street to enter the club. Police conducted a field sobriety test and took the driver into custody.

Police confirm that woman, age 66, died as rescuers rushed her to the UPMC Hamot Trauma Center.   Her husband, also age 66 was rushed to the hospital as well and sent to emergency surgery.

A  man walking nearby heard the impact and could tell how serious the accident was. "We immediately ran across the street to see if the two, a male and female, and elderly couple ...to see if they were okay, but they weren't moving at all," said Donnie Staff.  "The gentleman then got up but we put him back down, he just got hit by a car."

Police say the man was rushed to emergency surgery.  He is expected to survive.   Investigators have not released the names of the couple hit by the car or the name of the driver in custody.
