Inmate Arrested for Prison Overdoses Had Stash of Drugs Inside of Him

Posted: Updated:
An Erie County Prison inmate was charged today with supplying illegal drugs to three other inmates.  All of the inmates overdosed, one of them died.

Arrested was Nathan Howard, 48, of Tacoma, Washington. He was charged with Possession of Contraband, Furnishing Contraband, and Drug Delivery Resulting in Death.  The latter charge is the equivalent of Third Degree Homicide. The arrest report reveals that the drugs involved included heroin and fentanyl.

District Attorney Jack Daneri believes Howard had the drugs inside of him when he arrived at the prison on April 27.  The overdoses occurred within the next four days.  Howard was placed in isolation after the death.

"Our investigation shows no evidence that there was anyone else besides Mr. Howard involved in this.   There were no overdoses before he got to the prison and there were no overdoses after he was secured away from the general population," Daneri said.

Detectives interviewed inmates and prison staff as part of their investigation.  They also had access to surveillance video at the prison.
