"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Lives Up to Name"

Posted: Updated:
The American Cancer Society benefit walk known as "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" is really living up to its name.  The Erie region has been involved in the initiative for about fifteen years.

According to the American Cancer Society, in the last 20 years, breast cancer death rates have dropped 34%.  During that time, The American Cancer Society has helped more than 4 million women get potentially lifesaving breast cancer screening tests.

One in eight women in the U.S. will face the diagnosis of invasive breast cancer at some point in her life.  Joining the walk supports research for treatment and a cure and also supports people fighting the disease.

Anna-Marie Labowski, Community Events Specialist with the American Cancer Society said, "So when we can find it early by educating people about tests they should have and making some of those tests available, the people have a much better chance of surviving breast cancer, which is one of the reason that death rates are declining."  Labowski says early detection leads to a 99% breast cancer cure rate.

Ashley Anderson is chairing the 2014 walk in Erie.  It steps off from Perry Square at 10:30 AM on October 11. She got involved because her mother is a breast cancer survivor, undergoing treatment for the disease for the third time.  "The American Cancer Society in the research they've done actually has led to treatment she has used in her battle against breast cancer, so that's really what led me to become involved.

To learn more about how to get involved and register a team, you can attend a free breakfast August 13 at 8:00 AM at the Bayfront Sheraton Hotel.  Call the local office of the American Cancer Society at 866-5174 to sign up.
