Erie County's High Tech Crime Unit Gets A Boost

Posted: Updated:
We recently brought you the story on the arrest of an Erie man, charged with 60 counts of child pornography charges.
The arrest came after an investigation by Erie county's high-tech crime unit.

From smart phones to tablets and computers, computer forensics is key in a lot of criminal investigations.
And the DA's office says they're working to stay on top of it all.

25-year old Kedar Wright is of Erie, is charged with 60 counts of sexual abuse of children, and one count of possessing an instrument of crime.
Back in March, police raided his home on Vine street in Erie, and seized several media devices.
Detectives with the Erie County DA's High-Tech Crime Unit, went to work.
According to the criminal complaint, they recovered 10 illegal videos and some 50 images of child porn.

Thanks to a grant, Erie County Detective Anne Styn was able to recently attend a 5 week course at the National Computer Forensic Institute in Alabama to investigate crimes like this.

With technology constantly advancing quickly, DA Jack Daneri says it's important for law enforcement officers like Styn to be up to date.

We need to focus on that. It's become more prevalent of course with cyber bullying, sexting, child porn, stalking things like that," said Daneri.

"Any type of crime these days, whether it's harassment, homicide, anything dealing with drugs digital evidence can be a factor in it," said Styn.

Along with Styn's knowledge, the county also got thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment to help with their investigations, also free of charge to the county.
