Tops Markets has received approval from a federal judge to move ahead with its store closing procedures as part of its bankruptcy case.

Company leaders first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February.

In April, the Buffalo-based company asked the court to let the grocery store chain to close some underperforming stores.

Tops leaders said while the majority of stores are "sustainable profit centers," others have consistently underperformed.

Tops has yet to make any final decisions on which stores will close.

The company operates several stores in the region, including three in the City of Erie.
